Homework assignments
Due Week 3 (March 21)
Read chapter 1 from “Teaching English to Children in Asia” by David Paul. The reading includes many "Questions to consider". Choose any 2 questions and write your answers on the HUFS e-class discussion board. About 1-2 paragraphs for each answer is fine. Include your opinions, ideas and experiences.
Due Week 4 (March 28)
Due Week 5 (April 4)
1. Watch “12 Considerations for teaching young learners” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxZTspcyPts 2. Read Chapter 5 about listening and speaking from “Teaching English to Children in Asia”. Take notes on the cover sheet for discussion in class. You do not need to submit.
Due Week 6 (April 11)
Read chapter 4 below from “Teaching Young Learners English” by Joan Kang Shin & JoAnn Crandall. Answer the 3 questions on the first page. Choose one section of the reading that you think is most interesting and be prepared to explain the section and why you chose it in next class.
Homework - due Week 7 (April 18)
Choose a Youtube video for young learners. The video should be less than 4 minutes. The video could be a song, a short story or similar. I don’t suggest choose a clip from an authentic TV show or movie (such as Frozen). Think about how you would structure a lesson using the video. What steps/activities would you include in the pre, during and post stages of the lesson. Be prepared to share your ideas in class. Homework - due Week 9 (May 2)
Go to www.ecrif.com The site is about a teaching/lesson framework. There are about 5 main pages of information. Read the pages to gain an understanding of the framework. Be prepared to share and explain the framework in next class. Homework - due Week 10 (May 9)
Decide if you want to prepare a listening (PDP) or speaking (ECRIF) lesson. Listening - choose a short (approx. 3 minutes) video, such as a song or short story. The language should be simple and clear. Super Simple Songs channel on Youtube is a good option for young learners. Speaking - choose suitable target language, such as simple Q+A (example: "What do you want to be? I want to be a pilot / doctor / chef / ...") or a short conversation (situational language examples: going to the doctor or ordering food). Write down exactly the sentences, expressions, and vocabulary that will be included in the lesson. Homework - due Week 11 (May 16)
Download the blank lesson plan form below. Make a draft of your lesson plan for next week (May 16). This means the lesson is not 100% complete with all the details, but the basic outline of steps and activities is included.
Here are some example lesson plans for reference:
Schedule for the final section of the course:
Homework - due Week 12 (May 23)
Lesson Plan & Materials Deadline Please send your lesson plan + materials by email on May 23rd before midnight. Attach all files or send a cloud download link if needed. Include as much of the digital materials as possible. Obviously you cannot submit realia and puppets etc. Include as much details in the lesson plan as possible - for example how you will introduce each step and how you will run the activity (groups, instructions, etc.). Remember: You will present these lessons for the final assignment of this course while explaining how they are organised and the planning behind them. We will discuss this more in Week 12.
