Week 11
Homework assignments
Reading assignment - due week 3 (September 21)

Read chapter 1 of Task Based Language Learning by Nunan. After reading, make a new post on the e-class discussion board.

General questions to consider:
  • What are your thoughts related to the content of the reading?
  • What are your experiences related to the content of the reading?
  • How does the content of the reading relate to English education in Korea?
  • How will the content of the reading inform your future teaching?
Specific questions to consider:
  • Are CLT and TBLT practiced in Korea? Have you experienced these as a teacher or learner?
  • "A needs based approach to content selection" - What does this mean?
  • What are "outcomes"? What are the different types of outcomes, for example with tasks and exercises?
  • What are the different types of tasks? What are the strong and weak versions of CLT? How do they differ?

Reading assignment - due week 4 (October 5)
Read Chapter 2 below. Choose one or more of the following questions/tasks. Make a new post on the discussion board with your answers.
  1. What do you think about how TBLT is described in the chapter? How does it relate to your experience of learning or teaching? How might it influence your future teaching?
  2. Describe a TESOL activity that you are familiar with and explain how it relates to the framework for TBLT on page 25.
  3. Look at the syllabus design tables on pages 26-29. Describe a language learning task that you have experienced (as a learner or teacher) and how it relates to functions and grammar.
  4. Look at "Developing units of work" on pages 31-35. Explain why this sequence is good for learners.
  5. Look at the "Seven principles of TBLT" on pages 35-38. Which principles do you think are most important? Why?

Homework task for Week 7 (October 19)
Bring authentic materials
The Week 5 reading talked about authentic materials and language input. For homework, find one authentic reading (pdf) and one authentic listening material online.
  • The reading material can be found by searching Google for key words such as “zoo brochure pdf” or “salad recipe pdf” or “exercise routine pdf”.
  • The listening material can be a YouTube video. It should be authentic (not designed for language learning) and less than 4 minutes in length.
For each input material, think about the type of learners, the language content of the material, the vocabulary, what kind of tasks you could do with the material, and how you would plan a lesson. Be ready to share next class.
Homework for Week 8 (October 26)
Prepare a short speaking activity to demonstrate in small groups.
The speaking activity does not need a lot of scaffolding. It can be for any age group or level. Any materials can be used. Think carefully about your instructions. Be prepared to do your activity in class.
Homework for Week 9 (November 2)
Watch the following 2 videos on my Youtube channel. The first is about planning activities. The second is about sequencing activities into a lesson structure.

Homework for Week 10 (November 9)
Start thinking and planning a speaking lesson plan. The lesson should have at least one speaking activity. Consider target language, warm up steps + scaffolding.
  • Low level students: follow EIF with scaffolding steps.
  • High level students: consider TBLT + authentic.
Bring your ideas for discussion next week.
Homework for Week 11 (November 16)
Prepare a basic outline of a speaking lesson plan. Use the form below, which you can modify (delete the red text after reading and change the titles of the stages).
Week 11 will be a feedback workshop about your lesson plans.
