In Week 6 we will start planning a listening activity for young learners. This is a practice project. You will work in small groups to develop a listening activity plan. The listening activity should have 5-6 steps following the P-D-P framework. Class time will be given for preparation. In 2-3 weeks, you will present and explain your activity to other groups. Consider the age of your students and the listening material you wish to use.

The listening material could be:
  • a song or chant
  • a story
  • a video clip
  • the teacher

Homework task:
Create a lesson plan + materials for a 30~40 minute speaking lesson. The age, context, and target language is your choice.

The blank template is available from below & Edmodo.
Suggested order of planning:
  1. choose the age and context you want to teach
  2. choose suitable target language
  3. design a speaking activity
  4. create steps that scaffold towards the speaking activity
  5. think of an interesting way to start the lesson
  6. find or create materials to fit the lesson steps
  7. fill in detailed instructions on your lesson plan
Bring a copy of your plan on Tuesday 17 May to discuss.
Completed plan + materials due Tuesday 18 May.

Note:

Next week on Tuesday 17 May we will have one more class doing a lesson plan workshop to develop your plans. The deadline will then be the next day, so bring your plan 90% completed!
Remember: A speaking lesson is very different from a listening lesson. The objective is scaffolding the students in the internalize stage towards speaking the target language by themselves in the fluency stage. In a listening lesson, the main stage is the 'during' stage.

Speaking checklist:
  • Students have target language input before target language output
  • Provided the meaning of the target language
  • Included a variety of interaction patterns. E.g. T-S/S-S/S-T
  • Chose target language appropriate for the students’ age and ability
  • Scaffolded ‘chunks’ of the target language in stages
  • Scaffolded the target language from controlled to free practice
  • Gave students a chance to maximize output during the activity
  • Allowed students to personalize output to make it meaningful and memorable
  • Made sure S are aware or the task outcome and purpose, e.g. they will complete a survey and input data to a chart
  • Monitored students if they are doing pair or group work
  • Focus on fluency rather than accuracy
