Storytelling demo - September 19
You will do a
storytelling demo with the class. Bring a storybook if you can, and I will prepare extra storybooks. A short storybook would be better. We will discuss techniques and prepare during class.
You do not need to prepare extra activities and materials. You are not teaching a full lesson. You are only reading a story for young learners.

Reference reading about selecting a book and storybook techniques.

Homework assignment for October 24-31
Literacy Techniques Presentations (Oct 24, Oct 31)
In Week 8 + 9, you will do Literacy Techniques Presentations.
You will choose a literacy teaching technique and do a brief (5 min~) presentation about the technique explaining it to the class.
This is not a teaching demonstration.
Purpose: There are many teaching techniques, strategies, and activities associated with literacy teaching. Rather than me explaining them, I would prefer you to do the research and share with the class.
Literacy Techniques examples:
  • Grand conversation
  • KWL charts
  • Choral reading
  • Readers Theater
  • Book talk
  • Anticipation guide
  • Reading logs
  • Storyboard
  • Word wall
**see the highlighted orange words in the readings and the Literacy Techniques glossary file below
You can find more examples, info and videos here:
https://www.readingrockets.org/classroom/classroom-strategies

About the presentations
  • Approx. 5 minutes
  • Prepare necessary PPT, worksheets, examples, realia, etc.
  • Include what, why, how, when…
In your research, you should find at least 3 sources of information about the technique. This can include the glossary on my site, Reading Rockets, Youtube, websites, etc.
At the end of your presentation, include a slide with the 3 sources clearly included and linked.
  • you can just show this briefly
  • you don’t need to explain the sources in detail, unless you do find something very useful that you want to share
Tip: Try to fully understand the technique yourself before you make the presentation. Watch videos and read multiple sources. Don’t just copy the text from one source without fully understanding the technique, this comes across as obvious in a presentation. Try to include your ideas, examples and adaptations of the technique. If you fully understand the technique, this will be clear in the presentation.

Final Project

See Week 11 PPT for more info and examples.
Create a 5-day plan (syllabus) for a young learner literacy class.
  • The focus can be any aspect of literacy (phonics, sight words, reading fluency, strategies, writing, punctuation, spelling, etc.).
  • Include a range of materials, learning styles, teaching methods/techniques, etc.
  • Consider GRR framework, learning styles, Bloom’s Taxonomy, etc.

5-day Plan Presentation:
Prepare a 10-minute presentation for your 5-day Monday-Friday plan (presentations in Week 13-15). Your presentation should include 6 slides. This is to limit the presentation time and detail included.
Slide 1 : Name, topic, age, level, materials*
Slide 2 : Monday plan
Slide 3 : Tuesday plan
Slide 4 : Wednesday plan
Slide 5 : Thursday plan
Slide 6 : Friday plan

*List the key/main materials/links,
you don’t have to list every material.

Schedule:
Week 12 - final planning and prepare a schedule
Week 13 - presentations
Week 14 - presentations
Week 15 - presentations

Questions:
How long is the presention?
  • Aim for about 10 minutes.
Can I use materials found online?
  • Yes.
Can I add more than 6 slides?
  • If you would like to show something like an image, worksheet, or video in more detail, you can add 1-2 more slides. Please try to keep the main information to 6 slides.
Can I bring real objects to show?
  • Yes, this could help to show your ideas.
How long is the lesson each day?
  • For very young learners, 30-40 minutes for each lesson is average. It could be longer for elementary students. This means you may only have time for 2-3 activities per day.
Can I focus on 2-3 literacy elements for the 5-day plan?
  • Yes, you can combine literacy elements and have multiple objectives. Example: predictions + story narrative, writing a letter + punctuation
What organizational structures and contents should I use?
  • It depends on the literacy focus. Reading strategies and phonics may use GRR model for the 5-day structure. A thematic unit may use PDP framework. Consider various concepts such as multiple intelligences, Bloom’s Taxonomy, input before output, scaffolding, modeling, etc.
What kind of materials and activities should I use?
  • Variety is generally better.
Can I include homework activities?
  • Yes. For example the final writing task could be a homework assignment or you could give reading homework to save class time.
Can the lesson be longer than 30-60mins?
  • Yes, you could have longer lessons. For example an extra reading class with graded readers (40mins reading, 40mins activities).
Do I need to explain the concepts/theories in the presentation?
  • No. You can briefly mention if you wish, but mainly focus on what you will actually do during each class. The theory should be clear from this, although you can mention briefly.
Should I use technology?
  • If there is an app, service, website, or device that supports your learning objectives, then you could utilize it. However, creative crafts, realia, field trips, interesting physical materials can be just as effective.
